Meet Shreena Punwasi: Mom, Teacher and Local Business Owner | South Houston Moms

On this Mother’s Day week that coincides with Teacher Appreciation Week, it’s only befitting to introduce you to Shreena Punwasi. Shreena, a Pearland resident of two years, effortlessly balances being a mom, an eighth grade science teacher and a small business owner.

Although she has been in the states for seven years, she was born in the UK and has lived in France and Belgium. One may also be surprised to know she can also speak French. Read more about this inspiring mom, her creative business and how she’s adjusted to life in Pearland.

How long have you lived in Pearland and what made you decide to live here?

I’ve been in the states for 7 years, and 2 years since I moved to Pearland. Pearland is where my in laws live and we wanted our kids to be able to grow up close to them, like we did with our grandparents.  It’s been nice to have that family support and it allows us to take a little bit of time for ourselves too.

How many children do you have and what are their ages?

2 kids, 6 year old girl and 3 year old boy.  They can be a handful sometimes, but they are just amazing and I love watching them learn and grow.

Anyone special you’d like to thank for helping you through parenthood?

My in-laws and my sister-in-law. I just don’t know how I would have coped without their support. Beyond family, I have a wonderful group of stroller mom friends who I’ve known for about 6 years now. They don’t judge and are always there if you need a laugh or a rant (or both!).  Even if we don’t see each other as often as we would like, I can count on them for pretty much anything.

If you could describe yourself in one word, what would it be and why?

Passionate. I try to put my heart into everything I do, whether that’s in the science classroom or beyond. I think enthusiasm is infectious and if you allow it to shine through, it can rub off and inspire others!

How have you navigated teaching during the pandemic?

It’s been a struggle to be sure. Teachers everywhere have had to adapt at the drop of a hat, but that’s nothing compared to our students. My students have been magnificent with online learning, physical distancing and bearing with me as I try to make this year memorable for all the right reasons. We’ve had to get creative, but it’s a journey we’ve been in together – I think teachers will have a special regard for this cohort of kids. I know I will!

Where’s your favorite place to eat and/or shop in Pearland?

We love food so this is a hard one.  Kappa for asian food, Arabella for Mediterranean, Marco’s for Pizza, Zoe’s Kitchen for healthy meals, but if we had to pick one, it’d be Chick-fil-A all day everyday!

Where do you go locally for pampering or for a moms night out?

If I could go anywhere it’d be Elements Massage.  I had a massage by Josh once and I think it changed my life! I’m a runner and he was so knowledgeable about how and why certain muscle groups were hurting and gave me advice as to how to prevent injuries at home.

What do you do for self care?

Not enough – said every parent everywhere! But I’ve been working with an amazing coach – Jameela Amira, on improving my overall health, including prioritizing self care in stressful times.  Right now, I’ve been trying to get into bed earlier and have been making sure to follow a skin care routine every night! It’s baby steps, but honestly it’s made a world of difference for my skin. I also try to make sure I get at least one hour of “alone time” a week where I can do whatever I want, mum-guilt free.

Tell us more about your business and what inspired you?

Last year, I started The Chic Geek, a small accessory and gift business designed to inspire others to show off their passion.  It was very much inspired by teachers and parents.

As a teacher, I love dressing up and showing off my love for my subject. Whether it’s a Mrs. Frizzle dress or space shoes, I am always on the lookout for unique accessories. As a parent, I love to make sure teachers feel appreciated throughout the year with thoughtful, yet affordable gifts.

The Chic Geek is the perfect union of these ideas – I’d like to think that someone will receive one of our gifts and it’ll make their day! It started off with just cool and quirky earrings and keychains, but I’ve now expanded into making personalized gifts too to give it that extra special touch and am learning new things every day!

We are so thankful to Shreena for taking the time to share with us! You can check out her Instagram page, @thechicgeektx to see and learn more. Right away you’ll notice her entertaining puns throughout her posts that will keep you smiling as you browse.

Shreena is also offering a free pair of earrings or keychain with your first purchase when you mention South Houston Moms. Aside from Instagram, she can be reached directly via email at [email protected].
